SCHOOL LIBRARY KITS

LITERACY & READING

Most children in PNG do not have access to books in the home or at school. This is our chance to help Buk bilong Pikinini support PNG’s children by donating a School Library Re-establishment Kit to a school today! Having books available for reading and study will help the children develop vocabulary, memory, knowledge and improve long- term educational outcomes.

WHAT WE DO

Buk bilong Pikinini establishes Library Learning Centres in provinces across Papua New Guinea. These centres help to inspire children to learn to read and write and thereby improve literacy rates in the country. Each Centre offers an Early Childhood Literacy program and an After -School Literacy Support program. BbP also provides training for teachers in our literacy programs and self – publishes high quality PNG specific books and readers.

School libraries should not be a thing of the past…

Buk bilong Pikinini’s School Library reestablishment kits have been carefully packed to ensure that School Teachers have what they need to support the best literacy and learning outcomes. The kits contain a mix of high quality new and gently-used second hand books which are guaranteed to inspire children to want to learn to read. The purchase of each kit goes towards the establishment and maintenance of further Buk bilong Pikinini Library Learning Centres across PNG.

LIBRARY RE-ESTABLISHMENT PROGRAM

Most schools in Papua New Guinea no longer have books or a functioning school library to support the children’s education and this is a major contributing factor to the country’s low literacy rates. Going to school in PNG does not guarantee literacy. In addition to the lack of materials and resources, classrooms are often overcrowded and teachers overwhelmed.

Buk bilong Pikinini seeks to support schools across the country to re-establish their school library or re-stock their shelves with high quality and appropriate new or second hand books. We have developed three types of School Library Re-establishment Kits, which are available for purchase for our partners in both PNG and Australia and in turn donated to schools around the country. We have a very long waiting list - and receive requests every day - but are doing our best to get to everyone. We would love your support to reach more schools across PNG. Please see our brochure below for content and pricing. The costs cover manpower for storage, packing and logistics associated with delivery.

We are grateful for the support from Seafast, Express Freight Management, Pacific Palms Property, Hastings Deering and PNG Air, which allows us to keep the costs low and give us and kit donors the ability to support more schools.
