NUTRITION EDUCATION PROGRAM
WHAT IS NUTRITION EDUCATION PROGRAM
The BbP NEP integrates nutrition education directly into early childhood learning through play-based methodologies. The program embeds key concepts into literacy activities and interactive classroom exercises. Through this approach, children develop an understanding of balanced diets, hygiene practices, and the role of nutrition in supporting growth, brain development, and learning.
The Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) Nutrition Education Program (NEP) is a core component of BbP holistic Early Childhood Education (ECE) model, recognizing the strong link between nutrition, health, and learning outcomes.
To make sure these lessons stick, we take learning beyond the classroom with these key initiatives and activities:
The Breakfast Program (Active in 3 Centers) No child can learn on an empty stomach. This program provides a nutritious morning meal to children who arrive hungry, ensuring they are energized and ready to fully participate in their early literacy sessions.
Parent Awareness Sessions (PAS) Healthy habits start at home. Since parents shape what children eat, these sessions provide families and caregivers with practical, easy-to-use nutrition knowledge to reinforce healthy choices outside of school.
WHY IS NUTRITION EDUCATION PROGRAM IMPORTANT
Papua New Guinea is facing a major health challenge with how its children are growing and eating. National and International data show that families urgently need practical, easy-to-understand advice on nutrition.
Half of all children are stunted: Nearly 48% of children under five suffer from stunting. This means their growth is permanently harmed because they haven't had enough nutritious food over a long period.
Fast food and processed snacks are taking over: Families are eating more ultra-processed foods. These cheap, low-quality foods are causing new health risks, including a rise in chronic, non-communicable diseases (like diabetes and heart issues).

Programs such as the Buk bilong Pikinini Nutrition Education Program therefore play a critical role in helping young learners understand healthy food choices and develop habits that support their wellbeing.
