Sir Brian Bell Foundation supports Miss East Sepik contestant, Miss Wosera Gawi – Vilousa Hahembe, through Buk bilong Pikinini book donation

Port Moresby, 27 October 2025 – The Sir Brian Bell Foundation (SBBF) in partnership with Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP), proudly supported Miss Wosera Gawi – Vilousa Hahembe, a contestant in the Miss East Sepik – Beauty in Leadership Pageant, with a significant donation of educational resources.

The donation, presented on Monday 27th October to Miss Vilousa Hahembe in the presence of Mrs Susil Nelson Kongoi, Chair of the Miss East Sepik – Beauty in Leadership Pageant, was made by Ms Leanne Resson, Executive Officer, of Buk bilong Pikinini and includes:

  • 1 Primary School Library Kit (containing 1,000 library books)

  • 1 set of BbP’s When I Grow Up reader Series (30 titles)

  • 10 copies of BbP’s Cultural Learning Activity and Colouring Book

  • 5 copies of BbP’s PNG Nutrition Guide (for teachers and students)

  • 5 copies of BbP’s Tru & Kai reader

These books will be donated by Miss Hahembe as Miss Wosera Gawi to Kranjeviack Primary School and Wombisa Primary School in East Sepik Province.

Miss Hahembe stated that the donation would have a lasting impact on students in her community. “Kranjeviack Primary School and Wombisa Primary School will be receiving these books. These books will really support the students’ learning and encourage them to self-learn by reading and expanding their vocabulary. They will also improve their English comprehension and literacy skills,” she said.

Speaking about her platform, Miss Hahembe added that her advocacy focuses on accessible education for all children and youth. “My advocacy stands as accessible education to all children and youth. I have been volunteering in the youth space since my time studying at university, and I feel very strongly that now is the time to expand my reach and direct it back towards East Sepik Province. The pageant platform comes with networking opportunities in the province, and these are important to me because I will need cooperation from my people to carry out community projects. I hope that the work I will do during my time as Miss Wosera Gawi will leave a mark in the hearts of my people. I would like to see more children and youth making their dreams come true not only through school but also through their talents.”

Buk bilong Pikinini’s Executive Officer, Leanne Resson, expressed her appreciation to the Sir Brian Bell Foundation for their ongoing support and congratulated Miss Hahembe on her inspiring leadership initiative to promote literacy in her province.

“We are proud to see young women like Miss Hahembe taking the lead in giving back to their communities. Through this partnership, we are not only promoting literacy but also inspiring others to be agents of positive change,” said Ms. Resson.

The initiative highlights the continued partnership between the Sir Brian Bell Foundation and Buk bilong Pikinini in supporting education and literacy across Papua New Guinea. The Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer, Bronwyn Wright, reaffirmed SBBF’s commitment to empowering communities through access to quality educational resources.

The Miss East Sepik – Beauty in Leadership Pageant encourages contestants to implement meaningful community projects. This book donation will provide valuable learning resources to rural schools, helping to foster a culture of reading and learning among students in East Sepik Province and Buk bilong Pikinini is pleased to have been a part of this.
