LAE BISCUIT COMPANY, LEWA BISCUIT AND SNAX TIGERS TEAM UP WITH BUK BILONG PIKININI TO PROMOTE HEALTHY SNACKING AT ST. STEVEN LIBRARY LEARNING CENTRE

Lae, Morobe Province – Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) celebrated a joyful and educational event today at its newly opened St. Steven Library Learning Centre (LLC) in Lae on Thursday, with special guests from the Lae Biscuit Company (LBC), Lewa Biscuit and some of the Lae Snax Tigers players as well as their highly entertaining tiger mascot, Solomon. Lae Snax Tigers players in attendance were Joel Gena, Walter David, Joshua Miall, Reynolds Tai, Bradley Orosambo as well as their coach, Noel Zeming.

The event was part of BbP’s Nutrition Education Program, which teaches young children—and their parents—about the importance of healthy eating for better educational outcomes. This Library Learning Centre is BbP’s third location in Lae, proudly supported by The Chow Foundation and LBC.

The morning kicked off with an engaging “biscuit story” session, which explained to children how biscuits were originally created to support long sea voyages as a long-lasting food source. The children then delighted the crowd with a biscuit-themed song and dance.

The highlight of the day was the “snack pairing” activity, which introduced children to the nutritionally enriched Lewa Biscuit.

The Lewa Biscuit contains 310 calories and 55g of carbohydrates, this biscuit provides a significant source of energy, which is crucial for active kids. 8g of dietary fiber that aids in digestion, promotes gut health, helps regulate blood sugar levels, and can contribute to feelings of fullness. This can be especially helpful for kids to maintain regularity and healthy digestion. 5g of protein contributes to building and repairing tissues, supporting growth and development, and promoting satiety. 2mg of iron contributes to red blood cell production and oxygen transport, which is important for energy levels and cognitive function in children. Potassium contributes to blood pressure regulation and muscle function. Glucose is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream, providing a quick source of energy. This could be a short-term benefit if a child needs a fast energy boost before or during intense physical activity.

Students learned how to pair the biscuit with healthy items like fruit, vegetables, egg, peanut butter, and milk to boost their nutritional intake—helping them grow strong, stay focused in school, and be active like their rugby idols, the Snax Tigers.

With the guidance of the Snax Tigers players, the children chose their own healthy snack combinations to pack in their lunchboxes—bringing bright smiles and thoughtful choices. The morning ended on a high-energy note with fun rugby drills and games led by the Snax Tigers, much to the excitement of the young participants.

BbP is very grateful to the Lae Biscuit Company and The Chow Foundation for their generous support and partnership in delivering impactful, community-focused education programs.
