Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) celebrates World Book Day

Buk bilong Pikinini (BbP) has this week celebrated World Book Day at all its Library Learning Centres. The 5-year-old children all came dressed as their favourite book character. BbP is grateful to parents around the country for providing the children with such wonderful costumes to enter a world of fantasy.

World Book Day is celebrated around the world on the 7th of March. It’s a special day where reading and books are celebrated and appreciated. (Like a big book party.) People come together and talk about their favourite books, stories, characters, authors and illustrators.

The children learnt all about the many types of books and reading materials that exist, some children were dressed up as books such as dictionaries, Atlas, Newspaper, Clinic book and Bible and gave a little presentation of what those books are for.

Many children came dressed as super heroes, princesses, various professions, animals and fairies in lovely costumes provided by the parents. It is so nice for children to enter a world of fantasy and have a chance to change the learning environment to one which is more playful and imaginative.

The most important purpose of World Book Day is recommending books to each other and sharing stories. There was lots of shared reading, stories read by teachers and some children who are already well on their way to independent reading.

Providing children with access to borrowing books is a great way to improve their overall literacy levels and vocabulary. BbP’s Library Learning Centres each carry over 3000 books to choose from including the over 25 titles published by the organization and which feature PNG children in leadership positions.

World Book Day is important, because it reminds us that everyone has a story to tell, everyone has an experience we can get joy and learn from and books allow us all to travel the world without going anywhere. As it is also International Women’s Day today, BbP also advocates for the importance of ensuring that no girl is left behind and that all children have the opportunity to become literate.

Buk bilong Pikinini’s published books and popular School Library Kits can be purchased via BbP’s web shop https://bukbilongpikinini.charity or by contacting the organisation.
